But it was the buildings that really got me. You have to wonder: have Americans forgotten how to build dignified houses, or are we simply not dignified people anymore? Virtually every building put up after 1950 looked terrible and many of them were rotting into the ground. Most of them are little more than elaborate packing crates with a few doo-dads screwed on — exactly the kind of buildings, by the way, that Venturi and Scott Brown celebrated in their writings. They called them “decorated sheds,” the vernacular expression of the mainstream American soul.

Pedestrian runs into car’s path in Burnsville, dies.
Just so we’re clear, the car did not strike the pedestrian. The pedestrian ran into the car’s path.
The machines have taken over.

WASHINGTON — Sales of existing homes plunged in March by the largest amount in nearly two decades, reflecting bad weather and increasing problems in the subprime mortgage market, a real estate trade group reported Tuesday.
I don’t know… the weather? For how many consecutive months can we really cite the weather?

From a Treehugger post:
Articles in Auto sections of newspapers are usually rah-rah reviews of the latest pickup, spacers between the ads. Not the earth day edition of the Toronto Star, which had article after article saying things like “I watch people drive their children to every sport imaginable to make sure they’re getting enough exercise. We’re idiots.”
Heh.

There’s currently no plan for financing.
Might I suggest they dedicate all fines collected from Vikings players’ criminal activities go to a dedicated stadium account? That just might cover it.

What the hell is “last best” supposed to mean, anyway? We’ve been hearing it about our chances springing eternal in Iraq (for Friedmans upon Friedmans). I’ve heard it about candidates.
Are we really near the end?
My sense is that we’re not.
“Don’t think that you’re special, because you’re not.” Words to live by.

Took a nap after work today — I was tired and worthless.
It was a peach of a day though, and I was sorry to burn the daylight with my eyes closed. I needed to get a few essentials — return a couple of DVDs, get some St. Paul beer, and see if I could scare up some firewood for the new backyard firebowl.
It sounded like a job for an Xtracycle — so I grabbed mine and hit the road. DVDs, check. Beer, check. Firewood, check. Bike ride on a beautiful night, check.
